Coastal Bend Tornadoes - March 28-29, 2018

During the early evening hours on March 28, 2018, isolated severe thunderstorms began developing across northern Mexico and Deep South Texas. This was the result of a very unstable airmass, very strong vertical wind shear, an approaching cold front, and an approaching upper level disturbance. Between 830 and 930 PM CDT, rapid development of thunderstorms, several of which became severe, occurred across the South Texas Brush Country. Explosive thunderstorm development then continued through midnight across the Brush Country as the thunderstorms congealed into a squall line. Large hail of at least 1" in size and winds of at least 60 mph were observed with several of these storms across the Brush Country. Between midnight and 200 AM CDT on March 29th, the squall line intensified as it advanced into the Coastal Bend and the Victoria area. Widespread winds between 40 and 60 mph were observed behind the squall line during this timeframe. A peak wind gust of 81 mph was reported at one of the offshore oil platforms, KBBF (90 ft elevation) at 335 AM CDT. Sufficient low level shear in the lowest several thousand feet existed to produce what are called mesovortices along the squall line. Several of these mesovortices produced tornadoes across the Coastal Bend during the early morning hours. More information on the three observed tornadoes is below. More information on the Enhanced Fujita Scale can be found here.
