Fire Weather Concerns Continue in California; Pattern Change Possible Later this Week

Low humidity and gusty winds will continue across portions of California through Monday, although the weather pattern may change by Wednesday with increasing rain chances. Elsewhere, chilly conditions will persist across the northern and eastern states with rounds of light snow over the Great Lakes and Northeast, while areas of rain develop in south Texas and the Gulf Coast. South Texas Heavy Rain and Flooding Event: June 18-21, 2018

A tropical wave originating in the western Caribbean Sea moved across the Yucatan peninsula on June 15th and 16th, 2018. This wave then began approaching South Texas and its adjacent coastal waters on June 17th before finally arriving on June 18th. A series of upper level disturbances interacted with this wave throughout its life cycle and helped to maintain a broad area of low pressure at all levels of the atmosphere for the period from June 18th through June 21st across South Texas, the Rio Grande Valley, and the adjacent Gulf waters. Several surface-based boundaries and convergence along the coastline also aided the production of heavy rainfall. The wave and upper level disturbances remained across South Texas from June 18th through June 21st before eventually moving southwest into Mexico and weakening late in the day on June 21st.

Deep tropical moisture originating from the western Caribbean and the southern Gulf of Mexico was transported across South Texas. At times, the amount of moisture was at record levels for the date as measured at the Corpus Christi International Airport. The combination of this deep tropical moisture and persistent moderate to strong meteorological forcing produced multiple rounds of widespread showers and embedded thunderstorms, especially during the overnight and morning hours between the 18th and 21st. Most of the rain occurred between the early morning hours of June 19th through mid morning on the 20th. Some of these storms produced rainfall rates as high as 5-6 inches per hour! Storm total rainfall amounts from Monday (June 18) morning through Thursday (June 21) morning were as high as 15 to 18 inches across southern and southeastern Jim Wells county, extreme northwest Kleberg county, isolated locations in Nueces county, central San Patricio county, isolated locations in Aransas county, and western Refugio county. Most areas in the Coastal Bend and Victoria Crossroads area received generally between 5 and 15 inches of rainfall during the 72-hour period from Monday (June 18) morning through Thursday (June 21) morning.

Even though most of South Texas was in a moderate to severe drought with some areas in an extreme drought before these heavy rains fell, flooding still occurred due to the intense rainfall rates which produced copius amounts of rainfall. Flooding of many streets, some with several feet of water, were quite common across many South Texas communities, generally east of highway 281. Some of the hardest affected cities and towns were Alfred, Alice, Aransas Pass, Bonnie View, Corpus Christi, La Gloria, Odem, Orange Grove, Port Aransas, Premont, Rios, Rockport, Sinton, and Woodsboro. Several water rescues, especially in Corpus Christi, had to be performed due to the depth of the water stalling out vehicles.

Several South Texas rivers and creeks went into flood stage due to this prolonged heavy rainfall. The Aransas River near Skidmore crested at 22.01 ft on June 20th at 130 PM CDT. This crest translated into major flooding. Oso Creek in Corpus Christi crested at 22.44 ft on June 21st at 315 PM CDT. This crest represented moderate flooding along Oso Creek. The Mission River at Refugio crested at 28.04 ft on June 22nd at 515 AM CDT. Copano Creek near Refugio crested at 14.53 ft on June 22nd at 1015 AM CDT. The Mission River and Copano Creek crests translated into moderate flooding.
