Enhanced Risk for Severe Thunderstorms Across the Upper Midwest; Flash Flooding Possible from the Upper Midwest to Southern Plains and Desert Southwest Through Friday

Portions of the Upper Midwest will see an increased threat for severe thunderstorms through this evening, with a few strong tornadoes possible. The same region remains on alert for additional flash flood concerns. Heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding across the Desert Southwest today, and Southern Plains by Friday. Snow, heavy at times, will continue through Thursday morning across much of northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin. In addition to the heavy snow, freezing drizzle may occur over portions of Aitkin, Cass, Carlton, Crow Wing, southern St. Louis, and northern Pine Counties in Minnesota. Freezing rain and sleet were occurring over portions of northwestern Wisconsin late this morning and will continue this afternoon. The main areas affected by the freezing rain and sleet will be Ashland, Price, Sawyer, and Washburn Counties...with less ice accumulation over Burnett, and southeastern Douglas Counties.

After the snowfall, temperatures Thursday night through this weekend will fall drastically with daytime highs in the middle single digits on Friday and near zero Saturday. Lows Friday night and Saturday in the teens below zero.

Snowfall since Monday has ranged from more than 3 inches in southern Washburn County, WI to 28 inches 5 miles north of Two Harbors, MN. The highest snow accumulation through late this morning was along the north shore of Lake Superior form Duluth to Lutsen. More snow will fall through the day.
