A surface low pressure system moved east across Manitoba on Friday, August 7th, 2015. Warm, moist air moved northward ahead of a surface trough approaching the area from central North Dakota. Favorable instability and wind shear led to the anticipation of organized thunderstorm activity on Friday. Storms began in the vicinity of the surface trough by late afternoon, from Valley City to Hallock, and then moved eastward into Minnesota. Hail up to the size of tennis balls and wind damage to trees and a structure were reported from these thunderstorms.
