Mild through Wednesday; Showers/Storms by Tuesday

Dry conditions will continue through much of Monday before a few showers arrive Monday night and Tuesday. Some storms will also be possible on Tuesday and Tuesday night. Temperatures will be mild Monday-Wednesday with highs around 60 and into the 60s. Temperatures will then drop for the remainder of the week. Read More >

Overview

Potential Impacts for Next Week

This weekend's weather will be quite a bit milder with highs well into the 40s. Temperatures are likely to get into the 50s by Sunday. Winds will also increase today into Sunday, leading to melting snow and decreasing snow cover. Streams and rivers are likely to rise with the additional runoff. A couple of rivers may approach or exceed bankfull.

The first of our two upcoming storm systems will pass through the Great Lake Region Sunday. Much of this will start out as rain, before ending as a little snow. The bigger, more impressive system is expected to develop over the plains and travel eastward through the Southern Great Lakes Region. At this time, the potential exists for much of Lower Michigan to see some impactful weather. It is important to note that many details remain uncertain. The system will continue to be closely monitored. Any small changes now may result in vast differences between greater impact and very little impact at all.

We will continue to provide updates through the weekend as they become available.

Widespread Snowfall Affects Lower Michigan

A significant winter storm moved into Lower Michigan on February 24 producing heavy wet snow. This snow continued into the morning hours on February 25 before ending. Total accumulations for many locations ranged from 6" to 14". This caused some strain on trees with the wet nature of the snow weighing down on branches, causing some scattered power outages across the region. See the tab above for a snapshot of the power outages on February 25. Also, many schools and even state government offices were closed during this storm. Interstates were in better shape compared to some state highways and other secondary roads, which in many cases were snow packed and treacherous.

Below is a graphic of observed snowfall totals. Note: The graphic uses actual reports but does smooth out the accumulations, so it may not exactly match up with what fell. Some areas in the orange shading received over one foot of snow.

Resulting Power Outages

The combination of heavy, wet snow and gusty winds created stress on some trees leading to sagging branches that broke off. This caused some scattered power outages across the region, as seen below. This snapshot was taken the morning of February 25.
