Overview

A couple of lake effect snow bands impacted northern Indiana and southwest Lower Michigan from Saturday night through Sunday afternoon. The strongest of these bands came onshore into La Porte county Sunday afternoon, producing snowfall rates in excess of 2 inches per hour, along with storm total snow accumulations in excess of 1 foot in some locations.  The period of heaviest lake effect snow was aided by a strong mesovortex which tracked down the length of Lake Michigan.  This mesovortex resulted in a stronger lake effect snow band reaching La Porte county Sunday afternoon. The lake effect snow gradually tapered in intensity Sunday night.
