Spring 2019 Precipitation and Temperatures Spring 2019 Snowfall
Spring 2019 was well above normal for precipitation across much of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana.  In fact, both April and May were much wetter than normal, which led to the high Spring amounts.  With the rain, temperatures were also cooler than normal for the season. Spring 2019 snowfall was highly variable with respect to normal.

May 2019 was very wet across the area. Rainfall was above to well above normal for most of the area.  May 2019 was the wettest May on record for Chicago.  Besides breaking the record for most rainfall, we tied the record for most days with measurable precipitation.

...A Look Back at the Climate for Meteorological Spring (March,
April, May) 2019 for Chicago and Rockford...

At Chicago, the average high temperature for the spring season
was 56.4 degrees, which is 2.1 degrees below the 1981 to 2010
average. The average low temperature was 38.2 degrees, which is
0.6 degrees below normal. The mean temperature for the season was
47.3 degrees, which is 1.3 degrees below normal.

A total of 16.36 inches of precipitation was recorded during this
past spring, which is 9.56 inches above normal. There was a total
of 6.8 inches of snow recorded at Chicago, which is 1.4 inches
above normal.

Records established or tied during the spring months:

March:
* Record daily lowest maximum temperature of 12 degrees on the 4th

April:
* Tied record daily highest minimum temperature of 52 degrees on
  the 8th.

May:
* Record daily precipitation of 1.92 inches on the 27th
* Wettest May on record since 1871 with 8.25 inches

Spring Records:
* 2nd wettest spring on record with 16.36 inches


At Rockford, the average high temperature was 56.9 degrees, which
is 2.9 degree below normal. The average low temperature was 37.2
degrees, which is 0.8 degrees below normal. The mean temperature
for the season was 47.1 degrees, which is 1.8 degrees below
normal.

A total of 15.28 inches of precipitation was recorded during this
past spring, which was 5.59 inches above normal. In addition, a
total of 6.7 inches of snow was recorded, which is 1.0 Inches
above normal.

* Record daily lowest maximum temperature of 10 degrees on the 4th

April:
* Tied record daily lowest minimum temperature of 28 degrees on
  the 28th

May:
* 2nd wettest spring on record with 8.93 inches

Chicago and Rockford...

At Chicago, the average high temperature was 67.5 degrees, which
is 2.5 degrees below normal. The average low temperature was 48.5
degrees, which is 0.2 degrees above normal. The average
temperature for the month was 58.0 degrees which is 1.1 degrees
below normal. During the month of May, 8.25 inches of
precipitation were recorded, which is 4.57 inches above normal.

One daily record was set for Chicago for the month of May 2019:
* Record daily precipitation of 1.92 inches on the 27th.

One Top Ten Monthly Records:
**Wettest May on record since 1871 with 8.25 inches.


At Rockford, the average high temperature was 68.3 degrees, which
is 3.5 degrees below normal. The average low temperature was 48.1
degrees, which is 0.3 degrees below normal. The average
temperature for the month was 58.2 degrees, which is 1.9 degrees
below normal. During the month of May, 8.93 inches of
precipitation were recorded, which is 4.91 inches above normal.

There were no daily records for Rockford for the month of May
2019.

**Second wettest May on record since 1905 with 8.93 inches.
