Questions or comments can be sent to jonathan.mcgee@noaa.gov MODERATE DROUGHT FOR THE EASTERN VIRGINIA PIEDMONT, INTERIOR NORTHEAST NORTH CAROLINA AND A PORTION OF THE LOWER MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE ABNORMALLY DRY FOR THE VIRGINIA NORTHERN NECK, MIDDLE PENINSULA, SOUTH-CENTRAL VIRGINIA AND THE REMAINDER OF NORTHEAST NORTH CAROLINA U.S. Drought Monitor Drought intensity and Extent D2 (Severe Drought): A portion of Louisa County in VA. D1 (Moderate Drought): The eastern VA Piedmont, interior northeast NC and a portion of the lower MD Eastern Shore. D0 (Abnormally Dry): The VA Northern Neck, Middle Peninsula, south-central VA and the remainder of northeast North Carolina. Recent Change in Drought Intensity Four Week Drought Monitor Class Change A 1-class degradation in drought status has occurred across a portion of the lower MD Eastern Shore, and in Louisa County, VA, during the past 4 weeks. A 1-class improvement in drought status has occurred across south-central VA and most of northeast NC. A 2-class improvement in drought status has occurred across a portion of northeast North Carolina, near the Albemarle Sound. Precipitation Below normal precipitation has been observed during the past 30 days for much of the area. The driest conditions (25-50% of normal precip) have been observed across the eastern Piedmont of VA, the eastern peninsulas of VA and over the lower MD Eastern Shore. Above normal precipitation has been observed during the past 30 days over northeast NC and far southeast VA. Summary of Impacts Hydrologic Impacts Below normal 7-day streamflows are currently observed across much of the James, Appomattox, Roanoke and lower Chowan River basins. Above normal 7-day streamflows are currently observed across the York and Rappahannock River basins. In Maryland, the Nanticoke River basin is experiencing below normal 7-day streamflows. Mitigation Actions State of Virginia continues the drought watch for much of the eastern Virginia Piedmont. State of Maryland continues the drought watch for the lower Maryland Eastern Shore. A drought advisory is in effect for all of northeast North Carolina. Hydrologic Conditions and Impacts Below normal 7-day streamflows are currently observed across much of the James, Appomattox, Roanoke and lower Chowan River basins. Above normal 7-day streamflows are currently observed across the York and Rappahannock River basins. In Maryland, the Nanticoke River basin is experiencing below normal 7-day streamflows.
