Winter/Spring Flood Outlook #11 Northern & Eastern Maine Flood Outlook due to Natural Flows is Normal for Northern Maine & Moosehead Region Flood Outlook due to Natural Flows is Below Normal for Central Highlands to Downeast Maine OVERVIEW: The Risk of Ice Jams is Limited for St. John, Allagash & Aroostook Rivers. The Risk of Ice Jams has Ended for all remaining rivers across Eastern/Northern Maine. SNOWPACK (SD) & SNOW WATER EQUIVALENT (SWE) “T” = Trace Northern Basins: SDs T-8” in Eastern Areas & 12-28” West of Route 11. SWEs T-3” in Eastern Areas & 3-8” West of Route 11. SD & SWE below normal. Central Highlands, Moosehead & Baxter Regions: SDs 2-7” (1-2ft at elevations in Baxter SP) w/ lower elevations now just Bare Ground. SWEs generally T-3” with up to 9” at highest terrain. SD & SWE well below normal. Downeast to Bangor Basins: Bare ground. SD & SWE well below normal. RIVER ICE Northern Basins: 60-75% Covered. Ice continues to rot in place with many openings & thinning ice. St. John: mixed conditions w/ several large openings between Dickey & Fort Kent; Large open sections between Fort Kent & Frenchville. Another large opening between Madawaska and Grand Isle. Nearly 100% frozen Lille to Hamlin but surface rot occuring. Allagash: Openings increasing but mostly frozen from Allagash upstream for 20mi. Aroostook: mix of large openings/leads & crumpling thinning sheet ice. Small movements underway below Caribou Dam. Central Highlands, Moosehead & Baxter Regions: Free and clear on all rivers. Downeast to Bangor Basins: Free and clear on all rivers. PRECIPITATION & TEMPERATURE OUTLOOK Temperatures: Slightly Above Normal Precipitation: Below to Near Normal. Pattern: Large riding over the SE US will lead to much warmer temperatures across much of the Eastern Seaboard. Progressive jet stream will lead to some systems crossing the region bringing precipitation but likely below normal. Nighttime precipitation favors a wintry mix/rain and daytime plain rain. RIVER FLOW STATUS Flows Below Normal to Near Normal. Expect flows to remain stable. FROST DEPTH Northern Basins: 10-24” Deep, Central: Rapidly thawing. Downeast: Thawed. GROUNDWATER Near to Below Normal due to ongoing Drought. Recharge is occurring Downeast.
