The Tri-State area currently has a wide range of drought conditions: from exceptional drought (D4, the highest level) in Red Willow County, to abnormally dry (D0, the lowest level) in Sherman County.
Recent rainfall has improved conditions in parts of Colorado and Kansas, but drought conditions continue to worsen in parts of Nebraska that did not receive as much rain.

Drought intensity and Extent by County

Exceptional Drought: Red Willow
Extreme Drought: Hitchcock 
Severe Drought: Decatur, Norton, Sheridan, Graham, Gove, Greeley, Wichita, Cheyenne CO
Moderate Drought: Yuma, Dundy, Rawlins, Thomas, Logan, Cheyenne KS, Wallace
Abnormally Dry: Kit Carson, Sherman


        Star is centered on Goodland in all following maps. 

May Precipitation - Observed
Actual precipitation amounts in May varied by a large amount across the area. The heaviest rain occurred from Yuma and Kit Carson counties in Colorado to Sherman and Cheyenne counties in Kansas (red shading). The lowest amounts occurred generally south of Highway 40 and east of Highway 83 (green and yellow shading). 

May Precipitation - Departure from Normal
May precipitation amounts compared to normal ranged from much above normal in eastern Colorado and adjacent areas of Kansas and Nebraska (blue and purple shading) to below normal general east of  Highway 83 (yellow shading).

Fuels are dry across the entire area. Windy days with low humidity will have a risk for wildfires.
