Overview: Drought has crept back into eastern and north-central Kansas due to below average rainfall the past several months. Kansas Drought Monitor (as of October 21st) D4 (Exceptional Drought): None D3 (Extreme Drought): None D2 (Severe Drought): Small portion of northeast Kansas near the Kansas City Metro D1 (Moderate Drought): Portions of north-central, northeast, and far eastern Kansas D0: (Abnormally Dry): Larger portions of north-central through eastern Kansas 4-Week Drought Change Drought Worsened: 1-2 categories for portions of eastern Kansas Drought Improved: 1 category for small portions of north-central and northeast Kansas, and also far southeast Kansas 8-Week Drought Change Drought Worsened: 1-2 categories for portions of north-central and eastern Kansas Drought Improved: 1-2 categories for relatively small portions of northern and southwest Kansas Precipitation Past 30 Days Precipitation the past 30 days ranged from near, to below, to above average across Kansas. Locations most notably below average were over eastern and southwest portions. Precipitation Past 90 Days Rainfall the past 90 days has been mostly near to above average across Kansas, although below average rainfall has been noted over portions of north-central, northeast, and eastern Kansas. Temperature Anomalies Past 7 to 30 Days Well above average temperatures have encompassed the Kansas region the past 7 and 30 days, with many locations greater than 7 to 8 degrees warmer than average. Agricultural Impacts (Soil Moisture Percentile and Change) Soil moisture is mostly below average across much of Kansas. Over the past month, soil moisture has mostly decreased across the state, although some increases have been noted over far eastern and northern Kansas. Fire Hazard Impacts through December The risk for significant wildland fire potential across Kansas is average through December. Seven Day Precipitation Forecast Meaningful precipitation is forecast across much of Kansas through October 30th, most notably over generally the southeast half of the state. Precipitation and Temperature Outlook through November There is a slight signal for above average precipitation across portions of north-central and northwest Kansas in November. There is a slight to modest signal for above average temperatures across Kansas in November, especially southern portions. Precipitation and Temperature Outlook through January There are equal chances for near, above, or below average precipitation across Kansas through January. There is a slight to modest signal for above average temperatures across the state through January, especially over the southwest half. Drought Outlook Through January Through January, small areas of drought persistence are forecast across portions of north-central, northeast, and far eastern Kansas.
