Highest Severe Thunderstorm Threat Centered Over the Mid-Mississippi Valley Thursday

Peyton Robertson is the Director of the Office of Organizational Excellence at the National Weather Service (NWS). Peyton leads and manages activities enabling the National Weather Service to become the agile and effective organization needed to build a Weather-Ready Nation. Maintaining organizational excellence requires the ability to adapt and evolve in response to our constantly changing world.

Peyton's career with NOAA began in 1992, leading the agency's coastal nonpoint pollution control program for the National Ocean Service.He leveraged prior experience as a local water resources manager to advance NOAA and state coastal management program efforts to protect and restore coastal waters. After graduating from NOAA’s Leadership Competencies Development Program (LCDP), he staffed the NOAA Program Review, commissioned by NOAA Administrator Conrad Lautenbacher. The review examined the Agency’s strengths and opportunities for improvement, soliciting employee suggestions for organizational, resource and business process changes. 

In 2002, Peyton became the NOS Liaison and Deputy Director of the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office (NCBO) in Annapolis, MD. With significant involvement in strategic planning and organizational design, he developed and improved human resources and talent, including better business operations, workload allocation, and information management. In 2007, he moved to the National Marine Fisheries Service as the Director of NCBO. With leadership roles for key outcomes under the interjurisdictional Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement, he received NOAA Administrator's awards for creating the first interpretive buoy system to integrate real-time environmental data with cultural and educational information about the Chesapeake Bay and spearheading the Nation’s largest oyster restoration project in the Choptank River Habitat Focus Area. He served as team lead for NOAA’s North Atlantic Regional Team, bringing together a wide array of line office representatives and talent to improve NOAA’s service delivery to customers in this region. In 2014, Peyton led the assessment of NOAA’s services during Hurricane Sandy, resulting in recommendations that have improved hurricane forecasting and handling of storms that become post-tropical.

Peyton has a bachelor’s degree in environmental science and a master’s degree in urban and environmental planning from the University of Virginia. He is an International Coach Federation (ICF) certified coach, obtaining a certificate in Executive Leadership Coaching from Georgetown University’s Institute for Transformational Leadership.
