Afternoon high temperatures will remain above normal through Saturday, hovering near 100°F for the warmer lower desert locales. A potent weather system will dive south into the Interior West this weekend, which will increase winds regionwide and likely lead to elevated to locally critical fire weather conditions. Temperatures will also cool down to around seasonal averages by Sunday as a result, and a little further into Monday, with afternoon highs likely around 90-95°F across the lower deserts.
A wind advisory has been issued for western portions of Imperial County starting Saturday 2 PM PDT, lasting through Sunday 11 PM PDT. During this time westerly wind speeds are expected to reach up to 25-35 mph with gusts up to 40-55 mph. The strong winds may create difficult driving conditions, especially for high profile vehicles driving north-south.
This time of the year is the heart of fire season across Arizona. Several wildfires have received media attention and hit close to home across South-Central AZ, such as the Hazen fire near Buckeye and Jones fire near Wickenburg. With another dry, windy weather system likely to affect the region this coming weekend (Saturday & Sunday, 16-17 May), now is a great time to familiarize yourself with these wildfire prevention tips. Keep these in mind, especially with any recreational activities you have planned for the weekend.
