By midday and early afternoon, several discrete supercell thunderstorms were developing across the forecast area. It did not take long for these storms to take on classic supercell structures and begin producing tornadoes. The first tornado of the afternoon started in Neshoba County on the north side of Philadelphia. This tornado was rated EF5 and tracked for 29 miles into Noxubee County. From this point on, multiple tornadoes developed from multiple supercell storms. Nearly all of the storms produced tornadoes, with many of them long track and significant. The other violent tornado to impact the Jackson, MS forecast area occurred across Smith, Jasper, and Clarke Counties. This tornado continued into Alabama and had a total path length of 92.3 miles. At this point, 12 of the tornadoes were violent (EF4, EF5) with most of these having a path length greater than 70 miles. Loss of life during this historic event was staggering. At this time, roughly 342 people lost their lives, with thousands more injured. This is now the second deadliest tornado outbreak in U.S. history. The March 18, 1925 Tri-State tornado outbreak is first with 747 fatalities. This marks the first EF5 tornado in Mississippi since the Candlestick Park tornado on May 3, 1966. Thunderstorm bands, strong winds, numerous funnel clouds and associated tornadoes created damage across central Mississippi from midday on the third through the early morning hours on the fourth. One band of thunderstorms produced 5 weak tornadoes across Smith and Scott counties on the afternoon of the third. Most of the damage in central Mississippi was in form of (or caused by) downed trees. The highest actual wind gust measured through the entire event was 56 miles per hour. However, ground over most of the area was saturated from the combined rainfall of Lili and Isadora (which affected the same areas a week earlier) and this situation allowed tropical storm force winds to easily push down trees area-wide. Rainfall amounts were over 3 inches underneath the most persistent rain bands but only a few instances of street flooding occurred in Bolivar and Clarke counties. desc="A crippling ice storm struck extreme Southeast Arkansas, Northeast Louisiana, and Mississippi just before Christmas. A strong surge of shallow Arctic air drove southward and spelled a quick end to the unseasonable warmth. A moist southwest flow above the cold air brought several upper level disturbances to the area. This combination of cold air and moisture held together for several days and brought periods of freezing rain and sleet to the area through Christmas morning. Up to 2 inches of ice accumulated on power lines and much of the area experienced long power outages, some for nearly seven days. Total estimated cost of damage in the region was around $23 million with most of the damage attributed to down power lines and trees. Many counties were declared federal disaster areas."
