  • STI-M is pleased to announce the FY2020 NWS Office of Science and Technology Integration: Unified Forecast System Funding Opportunity

OSTI is soliciting research proposals that will advance the development of the community-based Unified Forecast System (UFS) through three competitions: 1) Next Generation Global Prediction System (NGGPS); 2) Weeks 3-4 Program; and 3) Hurricane Forecast Improvement Program (HFIP). This notification is valued at approximately $2,800,000 for the first year of two-year projects.  Universities are encouraged to apply.   For more details to support NOAA’s development of the UFS, please click here.
  • NOAA upgrades the U.S. global weather forecast model

On June 12, 2019, the NOAA's Global Forecast System (GFS) had a significant upgrade to include the new dynamical core. GFS v15 will drive global numerical weather prediction into the future with improved forecasts of severe weather, winter storms, and tropical cyclone intensity and track.
Read more about the upgrade here.
  • Public Release of the Common Community Physics Package (CCPP)

The Common Community Physics Package (CCPP) v3.0 was publicly released on June 17, 2019. The CCPP contains a library of physical parameterizations (CCPP-Physics), and the framework that connects it to host models (CCPP-Framework). In this release, the CCPP has been bundled with the Global Model Test bed (GMTB) Single Column Model (SCM) v3.0.
For access to the code and data, please visit the CCPP website here.
  • NCAR-NOAA Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for Co-development of a Common Modeling Infrastructure

This MOA was signed January 30, 2019. It creates a strategic relationship of mutual benefit for developing the infrastructure to enable broader community engagement for improving the Nation's Earth Modeling System modeling capabilities for operational and research applications. You can access the MOA at this link.
  • The FY19-FY21 Strategic Implementation Plan

Building on the accomplishments and momentum of efforts over the past year, the first annual update to the Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP) for the Evolution of NGGPS to a National Unified Modeling System, the Unified Forecast System (UFS), is available.  The link is here.
The Unified Forecast System (UFS) is envisioned to be a community-based, coupled comprehensive Earth system modeling system, designed to support the Weather Enterprise and to be the source system for NOAA's operational numerical weather prediction applications, as well as to serve both the Research & Development, and Operational communities engaged in the numerical prediction of the Earth System. This document is the UFS Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP) for FY 2019 - 2021. It is the first annual update to the initial SIP and describes the actions required of community participants in the next one to three years as they work together to evolve the UFS.
