Winter Storm Warning

URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
National Weather Service Juneau AK
432 PM AKST Thu Dec 4 2025

...SNOW FOR THE NORTHERN PANHANDLE THIS WEEKEND...

.A pattern change will bring colder temperatures and strong
outflow winds extending southward starting Friday night. Forecast
confidence continues to increase that this pattern change, in
combination with prolonged moisture, will produce accumulating
heavy snow for the Haines and Klondike highways and communities
of the northern panhandle. Forecast confidence has also increased
for potential warning level snowfall moving into Yakutat and the
Icy Strait Corridor. Heavy precipitation rates begin to reach
Yakutat late Friday into early Saturday. The main forecast
challenge over the Yakutat area continues to be the timing of when
precipitation will become all snow. The snow forecast for the Icy
Strait Corridor is more likely to be early next week, so we will
continue to monitor and update the snow forecast through the
weekend. Cold temperatures are expected to continue to spread
southward into early next week, increasing potential for a long
duration snowfall event.

for potential warning level snowfall moving into Yakutat and the
Icy Strait Corridor. Heavy precipitation rates begin to reach
Yakutat late Friday into early Saturday. The main forecast
challenge over the Yakutat area continues to be the timing of when
precipitation will become all snow. The snow forecast for the Icy

continue to monitor and update the snow forecast through the
weekend. Cold temperatures are expected to continue to spread

* WHEN...From late Friday night through late Saturday night.

still some uncertainty when precipitation will transition to all

fall late Friday into Saturday, even a wintry mix could cause
  snow accumulations to begin.

* IMPACTS...Visibilities reduced to one quarter mile or less due to
snow and blowing snow. Travel could be very difficult. Frostbite
may occur in as little as 10 minutes on exposed skin.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...An arctic airmass will drive colder air and
strong winds through Thompson Pass beginning Friday. The
combination of snow already on the ground, along with additional
snowfall expected and strong gap winds, will likely lead to snow
and blowing snow that may severely reduce visibility. Snow is
likely to taper off starting Sunday morning. However, gusty winds
  will persist.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Storm Watch for blizzard conditions means there is a
potential for falling and/or blowing snow with strong winds and
extremely poor visibilities. This can lead to whiteout conditions
and make travel very hazardous.

...POTENTIAL REMAINS FOR SIGNIFICANT LONG DURATION SNOW EVENT
INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK...

Multiple systems look to move through the region this coming
weekend and into early next week. Temperatures and snow levels are
expected to fall starting on Sunday and continue to drop steadily
through the week.

Current forecast confidence is not high enough quite yet for
warning level snow accumulations moving toward the NE Gulf Coast
and the Icy Strait Corridor, including Juneau, Gustavus, Hoonah,
& Pelican. This is primarily due to the timing challenge of when
the transition from rain to snow occurs and the amount of
resulting accumulating snowfall expected thereafter. However,
forecast confidence remains high on this staying a longer duration
event late weekend once snowfall starts, with snow and colder
temperatures continuing to move southward across the panhandle
into next week.

Stay tuned to the forecast over the coming days as forecast
confidence improves on the extent and timing of this system`s
impacts.
