Summer 2024 Session - Announcement

Gain Invaluable Experience in the National Weather Service!

 

Experience what a career in the National Weather Service entails! Apply to our summer volunteer program and gain real-world operational meteorology experience.

 

Outcomes  You will: develop an understanding of the culture, responsibilities, and services of the WFO; complete operational training; assist the WFO in providing real-time operational services to its customers; complete a (small) research project that benefits the student and WFO; participate in office outreach activities; receive career counseling; possibly visit other nearby WFOs. Current students may elect to receive credit for the volunteer program and should consult with appropriate university officials.

 

Schedule  The start/end dates and daily hours are flexible. See below. While some portions may be completed virtually, this is an in-person opportunity.

WFO Amarillo, TX

Dates: Jun 3 to Aug 30
Frequency: ~2-4 days/week

Hours: 2PM - 6PM

 

Eligibility  To qualify, applicants must be an undergraduate student or graduate student in good academic standing or a recent graduate (within the past 12 months). Applicants should be pursuing a meteorology or related physical science degree or an IT-related degree. All volunteers are subject to a mandatory security background check. This position is unpaid.

 

Application  The selection process will be competitive. Applicants must submit 1) a resume, 2) a single-page cover letter expressing interests and motivation, 3) unofficial transcripts, and 4) one letter of reference (academic). Interviews may be conducted.
