Damage was in less than a quarter of a mile swath between residences along either side of Hardiman Lane. Several residences sustained minor roof damage with shingles blown off. One residence sustained structural damage, as a portion of the bricks were cracked and beginning to pull away from the foundation. Several larger trees around the residences were snapped or uprooted. Maximum winds were estimated to be at 70 mph at this location. Just north of Hardiman Lane, a barn sustained roof damage as a significant portion of the metal roof had been pulled off. The tornado rapidly lifted just northeast of this damage location. A broad upper level low pressure system moving through the Tennessee valley region, produced an area of thunderstorms during the afternoon of the 17th that resulted in two tornadoes touching down in north Alabama. Several trees were snapped and uprooted around a residential property. The residence itself sustained minor damage as narrow wooden front porch pillars were broken and shifted by the wind. Based upon this damage, the maximum winds were determined to be around 75 mph, which is a mid range EF-0 tornado. The tornado skipped northeast with additional damage along Highway 72, just west of Highway 31. Multiple signs atop a large metal pole were blown out and a portion of the metal siding was ripped off. The tornado initially touched down along St. John’s Church Road at Saint John’s Church. Several tree branches were damaged along with several overturned grave markers. The tornado continued north-northeast crossing Hardwich Street where several outbuildings sustained damage. The tornado proceeded to cross County Road 39 and State Road 14 where several more homes and outbuildings were damaged or destroyed. On County Road 39, one brick home sustained major roofing loss and window glass breakage. One minor injury was caused from flying glass. Also in the same area, one mobile home had significant damage while another was completely destroyed. The tornado crossed State Road 14 and it was here where it reached its maximum intensity. It significantly damaged a well-built two-story home. There was a considerable loss of roof material along with one outer wall completely destroyed and another outer wall significantly damaged. It should be noted that the family of five took cover in an interior closet on the lowest level which kept them from significant injury. At this location, several hardwood trees were uprooted and several power poles were snapped. In addition, large cedar trees and other smaller softwood trees were snapped and twisted further down Dug Hill Road. Further east-northeast, a large swath of cedar trees and other hardwood trees were snapped or uprooted, with several snapped off near the base, which was consistent with EF-1 damage. Damage was seen just northeast of this location as several small to medium-sized trees were snapped along Magazine Road. About a half mile northeast, off Sandpiper road, minor structural damage occurred to a medium-sized metal building system with two portions of a west facing wall blown out. Debris from the walls and small portions of the roof were thrown to the northwest, perpendicular to the storm motion and track. Several pine trees were snapped and uprooted in this area as well. The tornado continued its track northeast toward the eastern edge of the arsenal perimeter, where several larger trees were snapped and uprooted. The tornado continued its track northeast and connected with the damage beginning around Craigmont Road. The tornado continued to track toward the west side of Memorial Parkway (Highway 231), in the 9000 block of Craigmont Drive. In this area, several large trees were snapped or uprooted with at least one falling onto the back of a house. The tornado moved northeast, crossing Highway 231, with several trees snapped along Oldfield Road. Extensive power line and power pole damage was also noted at the intersection of Whitesburg Drive and Lily Flagg Road. Several wooden poles were snapped near the base and a street light was snapped at the base as well. Several business signs were blown out in the area. The tornado was likely at its strongest point in this area, reaching EF-1 intensity. The tornado then moved across several residential neighborhoods, snapping and uprooting both soft and hardwood trees. Minor damage to roofs, mainly from falling trees, was also noted. A large tree fell on a house on Valley View Drive, causing major damage to the home. The tornado crossed Hickory Hill Road, snapping trees and eventually causing minor tree damage in the Valley Hill Country Club area. The tornado touched down near the intersection of Abercrombie Road (County Road 51) and Harrisburg Road in the Talladega National Forest of southern Bibb County. The only structural damage occurred at the beginning of the path where a home had siding torn off. Otherwise...the damage was confined to trees. The damage was rather weak at the beginning of the path but the tornado strengthened as it moved up County Road 51. The greatest tree damage occurred about 3 miles up the path. Numerous trees were either snapped off or were uprooted. The tornado continued northeast and crossed Highway 219 and Highway 82. The tornado weakened as it continued northeast across Antioch Road (County Road 20) and Highway 139. The tornado eventually lifted immediately west of the Chilton County Line on County Road 2. The brief tornado touched down in a field just southeast of the intersection of County Road 45 and County Road 3734. This location was approximately 3.49 miles east southeast of Addison. The tornado snapped and uprooted several large trees, completely demolished two sheds, and damaged a double wide home where a woman was injured. The woman was injured as she attempted to enter her vehicle and go to a shelter. The tornado continued north northwest where it twisted and rolled an unoccupied mobile home over 50 yards. The tornado snapped several more trees and rolled an unsecured mobile home on Dakota Drive. The tornado lifted just beyond Dakota Drive. The tornado then moved along the lake shore and crossed the lake. One boat house was destroyed, and a pontoon boat inside was flipped over. Several hardwood trees fell onto lake homes and sheds along Gary's Road and Spiller Road. The tornado weakened as it approached Robinson Bottom Road. The tornado touched down in a wooded, rural area west of County Road 21 and east of Indian Creek. The tornado tracked northeast and generally parallel to County Road 21. A hardwood tree snapped and fell on a mobile home near the beginning of the path on County Road 21. Additionally, the tornado snapped and uprooted dozens of trees beyond a strip mine area. The tornado completely removed the roof of a 50 to 60 year old home, damaged another nearby residence, and snapped and uprooted several more trees, one of which crushed a small produce stand. The tornado continued northeast where it demolished a large shed in the parking lot of another strip mine, and damaged the mine office. The tornado then crossed Highway 195 where it toppled more trees which fell onto nearby residences. The tornado lifted east of Highway 195 before it reached County Road 8. The tornado touched down approximately 3/4 of a mile southwest of Dogtown Road, near Seamore Mountain. This was in the Mill Creek watershed. The tornado tracked northeast and crossed Dogtown Road where it uprooted several trees. The tornado continued northeast and crossed Highway 78 and Ritter Road. This was the location where the most significant damage occurred. Dozens of trees were uprooted and one single family home had portions of its roof and roof decking removed. The tornado continued northeast and crossed Nix Road, Nauvoo Road, Jagger Road, Johnson Road, and Slick Lizard Road. Some minor structure damage was observed along these roads along with tree damage. The tornado finally lifted northeast of Slick Lizard Road before it crossed Highway 5. This damage could not be linked to the tornado in southern Winston County at Poplar Springs. 3.5 NW Pickensville - 1 E Ethelsville National Weather Service meteorologists surveyed the damage in Pickens and have determined that the damage was due to an EF-1 tornado. This tornado was a continuation of the Noxubee County, Mississippi tornado. The data contained here will address only the Alabama section. The tornado moved across the Mississippi-Alabama state line 3.52 miles northwest of Pickensville. This location was right across Aliceville Lake. The tornado tracked northeast to near Highway 14. The damage in western Pickens was relatively minor but damaged several pine trees along the path. The tornado then took a more north-northeast path, a slight left turn, and nearly paralleled Highway 75 for several miles. The tornado strengthened from near Jim Dill Road to Pine Grove Road, destroying several outbuildings and causing significant damage to a well-built two story home and snapping off and uprooting hundreds of trees. Just past Pine Grove Road, a manufactured home suffered significant damage and some hardwood trees were snapped off. This damage occurred in the Macedonia Community. As the tornado approached John Moore Road, it slightly turned right and moved northeast again. This area was at the edge of Ethelsville where several homes and manufactured homes were destroyed and many trees were also downed in this stretch. An unoccupied chicken house also sustained damage. Near the intersection of County Roads 50 and 43, a restaurant sustained roof damage and a carport was flattened. Further east, another large farm building sustained major damage. Along Highway 50, additional chicken houses were damaged or destroyed along with trees snapped and uprooted. The most significant damage occurred along Traylor Street just north of Highway 50/Grove Oak Road. Two large, well constructed, farm buildings were completely destroyed. One of these contained metal trusses and the posts were ripped out of the ground. Debris was thrown several hundred yards and large debris was embedded into the ground. A nearby home sustained minor structural damage. The path widened to 350 yards with estimated maximum wind speeds of 120 mph. The tornado began to narrow and weaken as it moved further east as it crossed County Roads 523 and 578. The tornado lifted near County road 72/Tumlin Road north of Highway 75. The tornado initially touched down in Marshall County in Boaz and moved eastward into Etowah County about a half of a mile west of Oak Drive where it snapped and uprooted several pine trees. From there it moved to the east and crossed Broadwell Road and overturned a tractor trailer and a camper. The tornado continued eastward, snapping and uprooting trees along the path. Several barns and small outbuildings sustained roof damage. As the tornado crossed Chumley Road, two mobile homes were overturned while more trees were uprooted. The most extensive damage occurred as the tornado approached Rowen Road. A mobile home was lifted and overturned leaving one person seriously injured and two others with minor injuries. In this same area, two additional mobile homes were destroyed. As the tornado crossed Brow Road, a one story brick home had one third of its roof removed and wind-blown debris was observed on all four sides of the home. Several farm buildings were destroyed with debris strewn over 100 yards. Additional tree damage was noted along County Roads 381 and 82. The tornado crossed into DeKalb County east of Gaines Road. A tornado tracked east from Marshall County along County Road 381. The tornado struck the Kilpatrick community along County Road 479 injuring 7 residents of mobile homes. Very large hardwood trees were snapped near the base. Numerous power poles were snapped at the base. Several mobile homes sustained significant damage with at least two completely destroyed. Several convectional homes sustained minor to moderate exterior damage in this area as well. At this location, the tornado was at its maximum width (220 yards) and intensity (estimated winds of 125 mph). The tornado continued to move east producing substantial damage to a large livestock building near the intersection of Highways 68 and 168. Metal from the roof that was damaged at the Sand Mountain Stockyards was blown down the road for around a mile. The convenience store at that point suffered minor roof damage. A semi truck pulling a trailer on Alabama 168 from the Family Dollar store chain was knocked onto its side by the high winds. The tornado continued to parallel Highway 68. A car wash sustained significant structural damage. A mobile home was flipped and destroyed near the intersection of Highway 68 and County Road 9004. Just passed County Road 130, the tornado removed a portion of the roof from a residence. Portions of a metal roof were uplifted from an outbuilding along County Road 3725, causing minor tree damage. The tornado continued east northeast, crossing into Cullman County (See Storm Data WFO Huntsville) just south of County Road 1043. The tornado remained on the ground for an additional 2.22 miles in Cullman County. A tornado crossed the Winston and Cullman County Line just south of County Road 1043, causing minor tree damage and destroying a barn on County Road 1038. The tornado then strengthened to an EF-1 with winds around 90 MPH and destroyed a mobile home along County Road 1043 just east of County Road 1038. The tornado tracked east northeast snapping and uprooting trees as it crossed County Road 23 and Alabama Highway 18. The tornado briefly strengthened to 90 MPH and turned to the northeast where it crossed Alabama Highway 107 and caused minor damage to a residence. The tornado continued moving east northeast, crossing Luxapallila Creek and causing significant tree damage along County Road 21, County Road 85 and County Road 80. 6.1 WSW Crews - 2.4 WSW Crews An EF1 tornado touched down in Monroe County, Mississippi, south of Greenwood Springs (See WFO Memphis Storm Data) and tracked northeastward into Lamar County, Alabama. The EF1 tornado with winds of 90 mph and 300 yards wide entered Alabama near the intersection of Pleasant Hills Rd and State Line Rd, downing trees near the state line. The tornado took a turn to the east, remaining south of US Highway 278. As the tornado crossed Shake Rag Rd and Abernathy Rd, it caused minor roof damage to one home and an outbuilding, and downed many trees. As the tornado turned to the north northeast, it crossed Sulligent Lake Rd and dissipated just west of Glass Rd. Path length in Mississippi was 7.02 miles.
