PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PEACHTREE CITY GA
415 PM EST THU JAN 5 2006

...SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ON JANUARY 2ND PRODUCED TORNADOES AND LARGE
HAIL IN PARTS OF GEORGIA /LAMAR COUNTY ADDED/...

THE OUTBREAK OF SEVERE STORMS ON MONDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING
RESULTED IN AT LEAST 6 TORNADOES AND SEVERAL REPORTS OF LARGE HAIL
ACROSS PORTIONS OF NORTH AND CENTRAL GEORGIA. FORTUNATELY THERE
WERE NO DEATHS.

THE TORNADOES IN THIS EVENT REGISTERED F0 TO F3 ON THE FUJITA
INTENSITY SCALE. THEY OCCURRED IN THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES
...JONES...JOHNSON/EMANUEL...PIKE...LAMAR...HENRY..AND NEAR THE
FAYETTE/SOUTH FULTON COUNTY LINE. DETAILS ON THESE TORNADOES FOLLOW.

IN JONES COUNTY...THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN NEAR WAYSIDE AND
TRAVELED TO BRADLEY..PARALLELING HIGHWAY 11. IT SEVERELY DAMAGED 3
MOBILE HOMES AND CAUSED ROOF DAMAGE TO SOME OF THE OTHER HOMES
ALONG ITS PATH. THERE WERE TREES UPROOTED AND SNAPPED AND A BARN
AND MACHINE SHOP WAS DESTROYED. THIS TORNADO WAS RATED F1 AND WAS
APPROXIMATELY 3 MILES LONG AND 300 YARDS WIDE AT ITS MAXIMUM.

IN JOHNSON/EMANUEL COUNTY...THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN 5 MILES NORTH
OF KITE IN JOHNSON COUNTY AND SKIPPED ALONG A PATH THAT TOOK IT TO
2 MILES SOUTH OF SUMMERTOWN IN EMANUEL COUNTY. ALONG THIS PATH
NUMEROUS TREES WERE UPROOTED AND SNAPPED OFF. THIS TORNADO WAS
RATED F1 WITH A PATH OF APPROXIMATELY 12 MILES LONG AND 1/4 MILE
WIDE.

IN FAYETTE/SOUTHERN FULTON...THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN
NEAR PALMETTO IN SOUTH FULTON COUNTY AND TRAVELED TO TYRONE IN
FAYETTE COUNTY...CLIPPING AND TOPPLING ACRES OF TREES IN ITS PATH.
SOME OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE OCCURRED IN FAYETTE COUNTY
WHERE A SMALL APARTMENT HOME WAS TOTALLY DESTROYED...AND THE
ADJACENT HOUSE WAS SEVERELY DAMAGED. AT THE SAME LOCATION A HAY
BALER WAS ROLLED APPROXIMATELY 15 YARDS AND BALES OF HAY SCATTERED
ABOUT. THE STORM THEN SKIPPED ACROSS HIGHWAY 74 JUST SOUTH OF THE
WENDELL COFFEE GOLF CENTER INTO THE RIVER OAKS SUBDIVISION. THERE
SEVERAL HOMES WERE DAMAGES...ONE TOTALLY UNINHABITABLE AND OTHERS
SUFFERING VERY EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. THIS TORNADO WAS RATED F2 WITH A
PATH 7 MILES LONG AND A 1/4 MILE WIDE.

IN HENRY COUNTY...THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN 3 MILES NORTH OF
MCDONOUGH ON TURNER CIRCLE ROAD. IT WAS RATED F1 WITH A DAMAGE PATH
OF 1 THOUSAND YARDS LONG AND 300 YARDS WIDE. NUMEROUS TREES WERE
EITHER UPROOTED OR SNAPPED OFF ALONG THIS PATH.

IN PIKE COUNTY...THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN 1 MILE SOUTHEAST OF
HOLLONVILLE AND CONTINUED ON A DAMAGE PATH 3 MILES LONG AND A 1/4
MILE WIDE. IN ITS PATH...5 HOMES WERE EITHER DAMAGED OR
DESTROYED...WITH ONE HOME PUSHED 60 FEET OFF OF ITS FOUNDATION. TWO
VEHICLES WERE THROWN 250 YARDS. THERE WERE 3 REPORTED INJURIES WITH
THIS STORM. THIS TORNADO WAS RATED F3.

IN LAMAR COUNTY...A BRIEF TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN 6 MILES
NORTH-NORTHEAST OF BARNESVILLE ON EADY CREEK ROAD. SEVERAL TREES
WERE SNAPPED OR TOPPLED ALONG A PATH 300 YARDS LONG AND 50 YARDS
WIDE. THE DAMAGE WAS RATED F0. THE STORM THAT PRODUCED THE TORNADO
IN PIKE COUNTY ALSO PRODUCED THIS TORNADO.

LARGE HAIL OCCURRED WITH SEVERAL OF THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS.
HAIL THE SIZE OF BASEBALLS OCCURRED IN JONES COUNTY NEAR THE
BIBB/JONES COUNTY LINE. THERE WERE NUMEROUS REPORTS OF HAIL THAT
RANGED FROM THE SIZE OF PENNIES TO GOLF BALLS.
