National Weather Service United States Department of Commerce

Applications for NWS Nashville's 2026 summer student volunteer program are now closed. Check back in early 2027 for next year's volunteer opportunities.

The student volunteer position is open to any student (undergraduate or graduate) that is interested in the atmospheric sciences. Volunteers will work alongside operational forecasters during the summer to gain real-world NWS experience, including issuing forecasts, putting together briefings, issuing aviation forecasts, launching weather balloons, and more. Volunteers should expect to report in person at NWS Nashville's office in Old Hickory, TN.

This is an unpaid position - but the experience you acquire will be invaluable!

Additional Notes

  • Students are encouraged, but not required, to work with their college or university program to acquire class credit for their experience.
  • Once the application period is closed, informal interviews will be conducted with the top applicants.
  • Selections will likely be made in early April. All applicants will be notified of their application status by mid-April.
  • For questions about the NWS Nashville student volunteer program or the application process, please contact meteorologist Alyssa Clements at alyssa.clements@noaa.gov.
