Active Weather for the Plains and Mississippi Valley

A developing storm across the Southern Plains is forecast to bring severe weather that includes large hail and damaging wind gusts, heavy rainfall that could result in flash flooding across portions of the Plains and Mississippi Valley. Arthur J. (“A.J.”) Reiss

Mr. A.J. Reiss is the Acting Deputy Director for the National Weather Service, a role he started in January of 2022. His primary responsibilities while acting will include leading several of the agency’s major change initiatives, supporting management-labor relations, and overseeing NWS’s safe and science-based facility reintegration strategy and execution. He also leads NWS’s human capital strategy, diversity, and employee engagement initiatives in order to best shape a culture where belonging, inclusion, and diversity can thrive.

Previously, Mr. Reiss served as the Director of the Ocean Prediction Center from April of 2020 to December of 2021 where he was responsible for its mission to provide early, accurate, and actionable warnings of extreme maritime weather to sustain the nation’s 2+ trillion-dollar American marine economy. He also helped shape and execute NOAA’s New Blue Economy Strategic Action Plan.

Mr. Reiss is a retired Navy Captain who served most of his career as a Meteorology and Oceanography officer including command of the navy’s largest operational oceanography center, the Naval Oceanographic Office, and a fleet maritime weather center after early and mid-career shipboard assignments on a frigate and aircraft carrier. Later, he also served in senior leadership roles at the Office of Naval Research and the staff of the Oceanographer of the Navy. He earned an M.S. degree in Air & Ocean Physical Sciences from the Naval Postgraduate School (1999) and a B.S. degree in Oceanography from the U.S. Naval Academy (1990).

A people enthusiast who loves to see others succeed in life and work, he enjoys serving as a professional mentor to benefit future leaders in the sciences. Mr. Reiss hails from Akron, Ohio but confides that he did most of his growing up on Lake Erie in his dad’s fishing boat. He last dropped anchor in Arlington, VA which remains the family’s homeport for the time being.
