Severe Weather of May 30, 2013

Local Storm Reports Rainfall Reports

Southerly winds, in the wake of the warm front that passed through on May 29, continued to bring warm and humid air into the Upper Mississippi River Valley region. During the afternoon hours, a trough of low pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere lifting out of the central plains triggered what is known as a "bow echo" over eastern Iowa.

Bow echoes are notorious for producing wind damage. The northern portion of the bow, called the "comma head," is what affected our region, and in particular portions of northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin. Numerous reports of trees and power lines down were received, along with a wind gust as high as 70 mph.

Below is the radar loop from the event over the region and how it compares to the evolution of a bow echo on radar.

Radar Loop from May 30, 2013

Evolution of a bow echo

Evolution of a bow echo

DB = downburst, or where where the strongest winds occur

Bow echoes which produce severe thunderstorm winds ( >= 58 mph ) for over a 240 mile stretch is considered a "derecho".  This bow echo was not a derecho. The last severe weather event that affected our region that was close to being a derecho was Sept 2, 2011.  Learn more about derechoes and bow echoes from the Storm Prediction Center
