Damage surveys by the National Weather Service and Shawano County emergency management confirmed a weak tornado hit a few miles northwest and north of Gresham during the afternoon of May 17. The tornado first touched down about 3:31 pm and produced intermittent tree damage along a nearly five mile long path, dissipating at 3:40 pm. The tornado was witnessed at a farm northwest of Gresham. This is the first tornado in Wisconsin this year.

The tornado was associated with a "mini" supercell thunderstorm and produced only minor damage.
