Key Points:

  • Severe Drought (D2) continues across northeast Wisconsin with Moderate Drought (D1) over much of the rest of the area.

  • Recent rain, snowmelt and snow has prevented the drought from worsening over the last few weeks.

  • The recent mild spell in late December resulted in a few days where rain and snow melt occurred, however most of this did not soak into the ground as soil temperatures were below freezing in most places.

Discussion:

Below normal rainfall was first noted in August and continued into September across portions of northeast Wisconsin. The dryness increased in magnitude in October, with many locations recording less than 75% of normal precipitation for the month. During November, precipitation totals were less than 50%  of normal across the entire area. The dry conditions led to  two large grass/marsh fires. Despite above normal snowfall in December, the low water content of the snow combined with air and ground temperatures below freezing has prevented the moisture to enter the soil. A mild spell at the end of the month allowed for snow melt and some rain which ran off into area rivers. There are still significant precipitation deficits over the last 6 months.
