National Weather Service United States Department of Commerce

The Student Career On-Site Training Program (SCOuT) is an unpaid volunteer program that offers selected students an opportunity to experience the wide variety of careers and operational duties that exist within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service (NWS).
During the spring school semester, students and assigned mentors coordinate job shadows at multiple NOAA and NWS facilities to gain first-hand experience in meteorology, hydrology, and other environmental science related fields within the agencies.

This opportunity is currently only available for meteorology-focused students attending one of the following universities:

  • College of Charleston (SC)
  • Cornell University
  • Florida International University
  • Howard University
  • Jackson State University
  • Louisiana State University
  • South Dakota School of Mines and Technology
  • The Ohio State University
  • University of California - Davis
  • University of Kansas
  • University of Maryland
  • University of Massachusetts - Lowell
  • University of Miami
  • University of Missouri
  • University of North Carolina - Asheville
  • University of North Carolina - Charlotte
  • University of Oklahoma
  • University of Utah
  • Western Kentucky University

Additionally, this opportunity is currently only available for hydrology-focused students attending one of the following universities:

  • Louisiana State University
  • Missouri University of Science and Technology
  • The Ohio State University
  • University of Alabama
  • University of Mississippi
  • University of Utah
  • University of Vermont
