National Weather Service United States Department of Commerce

Building a Stronger Contract

As we begin negotiations, we seek provisions that would:

  • Increase our operational flexibility and ability to involve employees in the testing and demonstration projects that advance science and improve our services
  • Create a stronger, more agile organizational structure
  • Lead to forecasts with more actionable information
  • Clarify confusing provisions and create consistency across the contract

We see a vision for the the National Weather Service that includes an important evolution between how we operate now, and how we can improve with the added operational flexibility we need.

What would change? We are working toward a Fully Integrated Field Structure that relies on better collaboration between field offices with a laser focus on providing the forecasts and data that help the people we serve make the decisions that protect property and save lives in the event of weather emergencies.

We will provide data that stems not only from the pinpoint of a local field office, but rather from a blend of computer models that provides forecasters a much richer source of information.

What wouldn't change are our core commitments. Our vision is centered on a mission delivered through science-based service, with a strong local presence as the foundation of a corps of NWS employees working in local, regional and national offices.
