Labor Day's origins can be traced back to the late 19th century. Oregon celebrated the first official Labor Day in 1887. By 1894, 30 states were officially celebrating Labor Day. In that same year, Congress passed a bill that recognized the first Monday of September as Labor Day. In 1954, President Eisenhower signed the bill into law officially designating Veterans Day. Although originally scheduled to be celebrated on November 11th every year, starting in 1971 in accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October. Thanksgiving has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789 with a proclamation by President George Washington. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a "National Day of Thanksgiving" to be celebrated on the last Thursday of November. In 1870, President Ulysses S. Grant made Thanksgiving a federal holiday. Under President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942, Thanksgiving received its permanent placement as the fourth Thursday of November.
