Thunderstorms and Heavy Rains Across Portions of the Central and Eastern US; Heat Expands to Portions of the East

Widespread showers and thunderstorms, some severe, may produce heavy downpours and flash flooding across much of the eastern and central U.S. Dangerous heat will continue in the Pacific Northwest and expand across portions of the East. The Office of Dissemination manages all National Weather Service (NWS) Dissemination Services.  Specifically, the Office:
  • Operates and manages NWS information technology (IT) systems infrastructure and services throughout the Nation
  • Plans, develops, acquires, monitors, upgrades, consolidates, terminations and expands IT systems -- directly or through NWS field offices and contract support.
  • Integrates and plans new dissemination requirements-driven technologies for performance enhancement and cost effectiveness.
  • Oversees operations of select dissemination systems.
  • Disseminates NWS weather, water, and climate data and information to the public to support sector-relevant economic productivity which help communities, businesses, and governments understand and adapt to weather-and climate-related risks.
  • Promotes increased accessibility, interoperability, and stewardship of the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) data, and leads, delivers and coordinates NWS’ contribution to NOAA, the Department of Commerce, and Administration data dissemination initiatives.
  • Maintains performance measures for Dissemination programs.
  • Works closely with NWS regional, field and headquarter offices to identify and resolve dissemination challenges.
  • Implements policies, procedures, and backup systems to sustain dissemination systems’ operational capabilities.
  • Plans, manages, tracks and integrates the Portfolio’s budget milestones and internal controls.

The Dissemination Systems Branch (DSB) conceives, designs, implements, and manages telecommunications systems required to disseminate meteorological and hydrological data, reports, information, and weather warnings to the public, public safety agencies, and the mass news media through governmental and public telecommunications systems. Some systems within DSB include:

The DST represents NWS at international, national, state and local levels and coordinates NWS dissemination activities within NWS and other federal agencies.

The Network and Satellite Infrastructure Branch (NSIB) manages and oversees the telecommunications and satellite infrastructure requirements of the NWS. These modes of communication and dissemination deliver timely NWS watches, warnings, and advisories as well as disseminate weather, water, and climate data. Specifically, the Branch:

  • Plans and manages all existing and new telecommunication and satellite requirements.
  • Conducts analyses and recommends priorities to senior NWS management after receiving requirements, feedback and other input from regional NWS offices and external partners as well as federal, state, and local agencies.
  • Coordinates and partners with other NWS portfolios if the programmatic responsibility for the telecommunications or satellite infrastructure resides in that portfolio or if there are policy changes required.
