A strong low pressure system moved through the Deep South during the day on Friday, March 11, 2022. This brought widespread rain, gusty winds, and a few thunderstorms through Central Alabama. As the center of the low moved through Alabama during the late evening and overnight hours, a very cold air mass moved in from the northwest. As temperatures dropped, the widespread rain briefly transitioned to sleet before transitioning to all snow. Most of Central Alabama experienced the snowfall, but only locations in the northern and northwestern parts of the state saw accumulations as the warm days leading up to March 12th allowed for ground temperatures to remain above freezing for most of the area. Temperatures continued to drop on Saturday, March 12th, and by Sunday morning, temperatures were in the upper teens to low 20s area-wide.
