National Weather Service United States Department of Commerce

Overview

The first significant winter storm of the season for many moved across the region on Monday, December 28th 2015, dropping a swath of 8 to 10 inches of snow from Iowa into northeast Wisconsin. On the southeast side of the storm, warm air led to a wintry mix - with sleet and freezing rain resulting in some icing. Winds were also factor, with gusts upwards of 40 mph causing significant blowing and drifting.

The wintry mix pushed into parts of northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin Monday morning, reaching the Interstate 90 corridor as mostly snow around Noon. The snow then continued to advance northward for the rest of the afternoon. The heaviest snows fell from late afternoon through mid evening, with 1 to 2" per hour snowfall rates common. Road conditions quickly deteriorated - with travel going from slippery to dangerous in a matter of an hour or two.
