As a cold front moves through central Illinois tonight and Thursday, a tropical air mass will result in a significant potential for thunderstorms with very heavy rain. Some of the storms may also be severe.

Areas of Greatest Concern

  • Heavy rain threat: Locations generally west of I-55, including Galesburg, Peoria, Havana, Jacksonville, and Springfield.

Severe weather threat:  Locations northwest of the Illinois River, with the best chances during the evening.

Heavy Rain Potential

  • Amounts of 1 to 2 inches are likely in general.

  • Locally heavier amounts greater than 2 inches, falling at a very quick rate, are possible due to the tropical air mass

Severe Weather Potential

  • Strong to severe storms will begin moving into areas northwest of the Illinois River during the evening.

  • Main threat will be damaging wind gusts.

  • Storms with strong wind gusts are possible elsewhere across central Illinois toward midnight and beyond, but the threat will be diminishing with time.
