National Weather Service United States Department of Commerce

An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for portions of south central Wisconsin Today. This includes the Dodgeville, Darlington, and Monroe areas. A heat advisory is in effect for areas along and south of a Baraboo, to Watertown, to Brown Deer line. This includes the Milwaukee and Madison areas.

When warm temperatures combine with high humidity, conditions feel warmer than the actual air temperature.  We can quantify these conditions by the Heat Index.  When heat indices are expected to exceed 100 degrees, we (the National Weather Service) issue Heat Advisories or Excessive Heat Warnings, depending on the values and length of time the extreme conditions are expected to last.

The last time we've had an Excessive Heat Warning issued for the area was back on July 3-7, 2012! Thus, it's been awhile since we've had the potential for heat of this magnitude.

Here is a map of the Excessive Heat Headlines:

Southerly low level flow ahead of a slowly approaching low pressure system will bring a hot and humid airmass into the region today. Temperatures in the mid 80s to lower 90s will combine with sultry dew points in the lower 70s, resulting in heat index values of 94 to 102 in portions of southern Wisconsin Today.
