August 2017 Climate Summary: Temperatures were below normal by around 2 to 4 degrees. This marked the 1st month to experience below normal temperatures in Paducah, KY and Evansville, IN since May of 2016 (15 months ago). The upper level pattern across the country consisted of troughing across the eastern U.S. and ridging over the west for much of the month. This lead to mild summer-time temperatures for our region, as northwest flow was common. Paducah and Evansville only notched 7 days and 3 days respectively with temperatures above 90 degrees. A typical August produces about 12 to 14 days with temperatures in the 90s. Record low temperatures were established at some locations, both on the 5th and 24th of the month, as readings dropped into the low to mid 50s.

As far as precipitation, a large portion of the region experienced drier than normal conditions, with generally 0.50” to 1.50” rainfall deficits. A few exceptions were in the Missouri Ozark Foothills, some counties in Kentucky near the Tennessee border, and in the Pennyrile region of west Kentucky, where heavier rainfall was observed, leading to wetter than normal conditions. The remnants of Hurricane Harvey affected mainly western Kentucky and the bootheel of Missouri on the last day of the month into the first of September. Rainfall amounts from 1 to 3 inches were common in these areas, with some isolated higher amounts around 5 inches in portions of Todd County Kentucky.

The graphic below is an interpolated rainfall map using actual observations. Please note that there are likely discrepancies in between observations, since the values are estimated based on nearest reports. Due to the convective nature of rainfall in the summer, amounts are more likely to vary over shorter distances, compared to the cooler months.
