A slow moving storm system over the northern Gulf Coast will continue periods of showers and thunderstorms over much of the Southeast U.S. through this weekend. The risk for heavy to excessive rainfall increases on Sunday as a surge of increased moisture moves over parts of northern Florida into southern Georgia. Read More >
On the afternoon of June 19, 2015, remnants of Tropical Storm Bill moved over our region and spawned several tornadoes. Most of the tornadoes were fairly short lived but one had a bit longer of a track. Damage from the tornadoes was mainly to trees/crops, but unfortunately, there was significant damage to one home and a business. Tropical storms are known to often provide the necessary ingredients for tornadoes. As the tropical storm moves inland, the winds near the surface will weaken but winds aloft will decrease at a slower rate. Therefore, wind shear in the atmosphere can be strong enough to produce tornadoes, usually northeast of the center of the storm. A lot of times, tornadoes associated with tropical systems will be weak and short-lived, but stronger (EF2) tornadoes can occur. In addition, the rotational signatures seen on radar can be extremely weak, making it difficult for forecasters to issue warnings in time. Here is a glimpse of the radar on June 19, 2015, right before the first tornado occurred, showing the spiral bands rotating around the remnants of Bill.PRELIMINARY Damage Surveys .TORNADO 1...
