The first month of summer gave the region a bit of a breather in
regards to temperatures. Many locations reported below normal
temperatures for the month that on average were around 1 degree
below normal. Rainfall was close to normal or just below normal for
the month. Although rainfall was below normal in parts of the
Midlands and Central Savannah River Area, heavy rainfall on the 24th
produced flash in parts of Lancaster and Richland counties.
By the time the middle of summer arrived in July, temperatures were
on the rebound along with scattered afternoon and evening
thunderstorms. Rainfall across much of the region was near to above
normal. However, some area did not receive normal rainfall and the
early stage of drought began to creep in across Barnwell, Bamberg,
Orangeburg and Burke counties.

The average temperature at Augusta Regional Bush Field for June was
78.9 degrees or 0.3 degrees above the normal of 78.6 degrees.
The average temperature at Augusta Regional Bush Field for July was
84.1 degrees or 2.5 degrees above the normal of 81.6 degrees
.Columbia Average Temperatures...
The average temperature at Columbia Metro Airport for June was 77.9
degrees or 1.2 degrees below the normal of 79.1 degrees.
The average temperature at Columbia Metro Airport for July was 83.4
degrees or 1.2 degrees above the normal of 82.2 degrees.

Augusta Bush Field received 2.32 inches of rainfall during June,
2.40 inches below the normal 4.72 inches.

Augusta...
July 7th...Broke the daily record 24 hour rainfall for the date as
4.64 inches of rain fell. The previous record was 3.67 inches set in
1896. This also established a record rainfall amount for any
calendar day during the month of July at Augusta. The previous
record was 4.58 inches last set in July 29th, 1887.
Columbia...
June 16th...Tied the record low maximum temperature of 67 degrees
that was set in 1961.
July 30th...Broke the daily record 24 hour rainfall for the date as
3.83 inches of rain fell. The previous record was 2.03 inches set in
1991.
Significant Weather Events for June and July...
June 11th - 12th...A slow moving cold front moved across the region
during late afternoon and overnight hours of the 11th and 12th.
Strong thunderstorms produced locally heavy rainfall, especially
across the Midlands. The heavy rainfall produced some minor flooding
along Rocky Branch in Columbia. The stream gauge at Whaley Street
and Main Street crested at 8.37 feet. Flood stage is 7.2 feet. The
rain fell in less than an hour with amounts from 1.19 inches at
Richland County EMD Headquarters up to 1.38 inches at the Forest
Acres Police Department.

June 17th...An unseasonably cool airmass across the region for the
middle of June produced pleasant daytime high temperatures. High
temperatures were only able to climb into the lower 60s across the
northern Midlands to the lower 70s across the southern Midlands and
CSRA.

June 24th...Locally heavy rainfall produced by slow moving produced
flash flooding across Lancaster and Richland Counties. In Lancaster
County there were several roads that were flooded and impassable
along with a person that had to be rescued from a motor vehicle. In
Columbia, several streets flooded including the area along Rocky
Branch. The stream gauge at Whaley Street and Main Street crested at
9.99 at 245 pm in the afternoon. Flood stage is 7.2 feet. There were
also reports of trees down along with pea to nickel size hail with
the storms.

June 27th and 28th...A trough of low pressure across the Midlands
was the focus for strong to severe thunderstorms during the
afternoon and evening hours. There were numerous reports of trees
down from Lancaster County southward across the Columbia Metro Area
into the Central Savannah River Area.

July 6th-8th...A weak area of low pressure along a stalled frontal
boundary across Georgia and the Carolinas produced heavy rainfall
across the Central Savannah River Area. Rainfall amounts ranged from
2 to 7 inches across the region. The heavy rainfall produced flash
flooding across Lincoln and Edgefield counties. Several roads in the
region were flooded where roadways were impassable. In Edgefield
County, an elderly woman and her cat had to be rescued and people
had to be rescued from their home.

...48 Hour Rainfall Totals...
The following is a list of total rainfall amounts for the 48 hour
period ending mid afternoon July 8th, and includes rain from the 6th
and 7th.
Most of the precipitation occurred early in the morning on Tuesday
July 7th. A persistent band of heavy showers, and some
thunderstorms, developed ahead of a surface low and upper trough, in
a very moist environment. The band of rain persisted over the same
general area, during the morning into early afternoon, and provided
heavy rainfall amounts across portions of Aiken, Edgefield, and
southern McCormick Counties in SC, and over southern Lincoln,
Columbia, and Richmond Counties in GA. There were several reports of
flooded homes and flooded or washed out roads.
Augusta GA established a new daily rainfall record for July 7th of
4.64 inches, which also established a new calendar day rainfall
record for any day during the month of July in Augusta, breaking the
old daily July daily record of 4.58 inches set on July 29th, 1887.

July 29th...A weak frontal boundary draped north of the region
combined with a weak surface trough across the Upstate produced
locally heavy rainfall across the central Midlands. Rainfall amounts
ranged from 1 to 4 inches. The heavy rainfall produced flash
flooding in parts of Lexington County. A vehicle was submerged on
Lloydwood Drive. A portion of Charleston Highway (US 176) was washed
out near the State Farmers Market.
