Thunderstorms in the North Central U.S.; Dangerous Heat in Texas

There is a severe weather and isolated flooding threat from the Central to Northern Plains tonight into early Thursday. The severe weather threat will progress eastward to the Upper Mississippi Valley/Great Lakes into the Lower Ohio Valley Thursday. Additional much needed rain fell across the Midlands and Central
Savannah River Area during the month of January. The drought
conditions continued to ease across the region. The most
significant event of the month was the severe weather outbreak
across the Southeast on the 21st and 22nd. There were 5 confirmed
tornadoes across the Midlands and CSRA on the 21st. Temperatures
continued the trend of above normal for the month.

The average temperature at Augusta Regional Bush Field for January
was 55.5 degrees or 10.1 degrees above the normal of 45.2 degrees.

The average temperature at Columbia Metro Airport for January was

Events for January 2017...

January 1st thru 3rd...

A slow moving area of low pressure produced 1 to 4 inches of
rainfall across the Midlands and CSRA. The highest rainfall amounts
were reported across the CSRA region. The heavy rainfall produced
roadway flooding along with washed out roadways in portions of Aiken
County. River flooding occurred along the N. Fork of the Edisto
River at Orangeburg. The river crested at 8.16 feet and produced
minor flooding. Flood stage is 8.0 feet.


January 6th-7th...

An area of low pressure developed in the western Gulf of America
and tracked to the northeast. The area of low pressure moved across
northern Florida and then off the Carolina coast on the 7th. The
system produced a mixture of rain...sleet and snow across the
northern and central Midlands. Precipitation totals ranged from
one half inch up to one inch across the area. Up to 1 inch of
snow fell across the panhandle of Lancaster County with amounts
from one quarter inch to one half inch across the remainder of
the county. A dusting of snow up to one half inch was reported
across portions of the central and eastern Midland counties of
Newberry...Fairfield...Kershaw...Richland...Lexington and Sumter
counties. The additional rainfall produced another crest above
flood stage along the N. Fork of the Edisto River at Orangeburg.
The river crested at 8.25 feet on the 8th. Flood stage is 8.0 feet.


January 9th... It was a cold morning across the Midlands and CSRA as
cold Canadian high pressure build in across the region behind the
wintry weather. Temperatures fell into the middle to upper teens
across much of the area.

January 21st through 22nd...

A stalled frontal boundary from southern Georgia into southeastern
South Carolina was the focus for one of the largest severe weather
outbreaks for January. This feature combined with several mid level
weather systems produced 5 tornadoes across the Midlands and CSRA
along with strong damaging winds and locally heavy rainfall. All of
the tornadoes occurred on the 21st across the Midlands and CSRA.
There were 3 tornadoes in Burke county Georgia. Another 2 tornadoes
moved across Barnwell...Bamberg and Orangeburg counties.

An EF1 Tornado passed just south of Waynesboro. The path length was
1 mile long with a width of 95 yards. It shredded a block wall on a
metal roof building and snapped several trees. The max winds were
estimated to be 95 mph.

An EF0 Tornado passed just northwest of Midville. The path length
was 1.3 miles long with a width of 250 yards. It snapped several
trees and overturned an irrigation system. The max winds were
estimated to be 85 mph.

An EF0 Tornado passed just southeast of the community of Rosier. The
path was 1.5 miles with a width of 100 yards. It damaged a metal
roof building and several calf weaning huts. The max winds were
estimated to be 80 mph.

An EF2 Tornado passed just south of Blackville and into northern
Bamberg county above Denmark. The path was 13.6 miles with a width
of 1600 yards. It damaged several structures and destroyed one
mobile home. A woman was injured as she was trapped inside the
mobile home. Several chicken houses suffered extensive roof and
siding damage. The worst damage associated with the tornado
occurred in Barnwell State Park. There were hundreds of trees
downed...damaged or snapped off. A cottage in the park was also
damaged from a fallen tree. The max winds were estimated to be 115
mph.

An EF1 Tornado moved from the N. Fork of the Edisto River to near
the town of Cope. It damaged three mobile homes that were heavily
damaged and a metal farm building collapsed. Numerous trees were
either snapped or uprooted. The path was 5.5 miles with a width of
400 yards. The max winds were estimated to be 95 mph.

The heavy rainfall produced flooding once again along the Edisto
River Basin. The N. Fork of the Edisto River at Orangeburg crested
at 8.17 feet on the 24th producing minor flooding. Flood stage is
8.0 feet.

ENSO (EL NINO SOUTHERN OSCILLATION)...
...La Nina Conditions are Present...

Equatorial sea surface temperatures are near-to-below average in
the central and east-central equatorial Pacific Ocean. They are
above average in the far eastern Pacific Ocean. A transition
to ENSO-neutral conditions is expected to occur during February
2017 with ENSO neutral continuing through the first half of 2017.
