The months of February and March will be remembered for the pattern
of above normal temperatures and above normal precipitation. This
pattern developed back in the later portion of November 2019 and
continued through until March. It produced the wettest winter on
record at Columbia and the 4th wettest winter on record at Augusta.
It also produced the 10th warmest winter on record at Columbia and
the 11th warmest winter on record at Augusta.

The active weather pattern produced a severe weather event on
February 6th that produced an EF-1 Tornado in Aiken County near the
town of Vaucluse. The tornado briefly touched the ground for just
over 1 mile and had maximum wind speeds around 105 mph. The active
pattern produced above normal rainfall for the region. The wet
weather led to numerous periods of river flooding across the
Midlands and Central Savannah River Area.

February 6th, 2020...
A rapidly developing area of low pressure west of the area along
with it`s associated cold front approached the area on the 6th.
This system produced strong damaging winds along with an EF-1
Tornado in Aiken County. The system also produced strong winds
ahead of the system and following the system on the 7th. This
system downed trees and powerlines across the Midlands and
Central Savannah River Area. The heavy rainfall also produced
Minor to Major River Flooding along many of the area rivers.
Rainfall amounts from 2 to 6 inches fell across the river basins
over at 48 hour period.

The Enoree River at Whitmire crested at 32.1 feet on the 8th.
Flood stage is 25.0 feet.

The North Fork of the Edisto River crested at 9.25 feet on the
8th. Flood stage is 8.0 feet.

Stevens Creek at Modoc crested at 34.57 feet on the 7th. Flood
stage is 19.0 feet. Major Flood is 35.0 feet. This was the 6th
highest crest on record. Records began in 1940.

The Great Pee Dee River at Cheraw crested at 42.50 feet on the
8th. Flood stage is 30 feet. Major Flood is 42.0 feet. It was
the 9th highest crest on record. Records began in 1864.

The Congaree River at Columbia crested at 29.19 feet on the
9th. Flood stage is 19.0 feet. Major Flood is 30.0 feet. This was
the 10th highest crest on record. The last time the river crested
this high was during the historic flooding of October 2015, when
the river crested at 31.81 feet.

The Congaree River at Carolina Eastman crested at 126.40 feet on
the 9th. Flood stage is 115.0 feet. This was the 4th highest crest
on record, just below the highest crest associated with the
historic October 2015 flood event. At that time the river crested
at 126.90 feet. Records began 1971.

The Congaree River at Gadsden-Congaree National Park crested
19.54 feet on the 10th. Flood stage is 15.0 feet. This is the 2nd
highest crest on record. The only higher crested was associated
with the October 2015 flood event when the river crested at
19.83 feet. Records began in 1983.

The Wateree River at Lake Wateree crested at 106.04 feet on the
9th. Full Pool is 100.0 feet. Major flood elevation is 105.0 feet.
This was the 2nd highest pool elevation on record. The highest
was associated with Hurricane Hugo in 1989. The pool height crested
at 107.0 feet on October 3rd, 1989.

The Wateree River at Camden crested at 32.23 feet on the 8th.
Flood stage is 27.0 feet. Major Flood is 35.0 feet. This was the
7th highest crest on record. Records began in 1892.

The Saluda River at Chappells crested at 24.43 feet on the 8th.
Flood stage is 14.0 feet.

...Summary...
A NWS Storm Survey Team determined that an EF-1 tornado, with
wind speeds up to 105 mph, occurred north of Vaucluse in Aiken
County, SC on Thursday, 2/6/20. The tornado began just beyond a
perimeter trail on the southwest side of Stable View Farm. The
tornado continued northeast across the farm where it snapped
and uprooted numerous pine trees. The tornado caused minor roof
damage to a barn, overturned a detached semi trailer, and
destroyed 5 stables that were constructed of aluminum and hard
vinyl along Springfield Church Road. The tornado then continued
northeast, crossing Westo Road, then causing damage around a
house on Smith Lane where it overturned a small equipment
trailer and a small RV trailer which then landed on top of an
SUV. There was minor roof damage to the house along with
numerous snapped and uprooted pine trees around the property.
The tornado then lifted as it crossed a field on the north side
of Smith Lane. Additional straight-line wind damage in the form
of a few snapped or uprooted pine trees was observed northeast
along Indian Springs Road to Old Lawson Road. The tornado was on
the ground for approximately 1.15 miles and had a path width of
around 75 yards at its widest point.


February 13th, 2020...
A strong cold front moved across the Midlands and CSRA during the
late morning into early afternoon hours. The front produced a
line of showers along with a few thunderstorms. Some strong
winds were associated with the system as it crossed the region.

An area low pressure developed along a frontal boundary in
northern Gulf of America. This system tracked along the Southeast
coast and produced heavy rainfall across the region. This
system produced another round of minor to moderate river flooding

ENSO (EL NINO SOUTHERN OSCILLATION)...
ENSO-neutral conditions are present.

Equatorial sea surface temperatures are near to above average across
the Pacific Ocean.

ENSO-neutral is favored during the Northern Hemisphere spring 2020
with around a 65 percent chance of continuance. There is around a 55
percent chance that ENSO-neutral conditions will continue through
the Summer 2020.
