Environment
A cold front slowly moved southeast and stalled over the area on the evening of March 31st (Figure 1). Amid zonal flow aloft and with upper level divergence (Figure 2 & 3), storms were able to develop between 6-8 PM EDT on March 31st. This was a somewhat high shear, low CAPE setup which 40-50 kts of bulk shear and about 500-1000 J/kg of surface CAPE (Figure 7). Mid level lapse rates were decent at 6 to 6.5 C/km, which supported an initial threat for hail in northern Indiana (Figure 4). There was a lot of low level wind shear, as evidenced by the localized 150-250 m2/s2 0-1 km SRH on the evening of March 31st and LCLs were below 1000m (Figures 5 and 6). As the frontal boundary stalled, heavy rain and flooding materialized throughout the evening with strong 850 mb transport and precipitable water values up to 1.4" (Figures 8 and 9).
