Summary of Year 2000 Precipitation over Northern Indiana, Northwest Ohio and Extreme Southern Michigan
The drought of the summer and fall of 1999 continued through the winter of 2000. Precipitation ran over 1.5 inches below normal across the area through April. However the drought began to abate in May and June when beneficial rains fell across the area. June, 2000 set records for the most rainfall in a June at Fort Wayne. At South Bend it was the 4th wettest June on record. Minor flooding occurred in Northeast Indiana and Northwest Ohio in May and June. Rainfall totals moved back toward normal through the rest of the summer. Precipitation totals averaged almost 4.5 inches above normal for the last 8 months of the year. Unfortunately some areas still closed out the year below normal.
In 2000, the driest areas were found over Northwest Indiana along with a couple of spots in extreme northeast and southeast parts of Northeast Indiana. Angola in Northeast Indiana and Portland in the southeast part of Northeast Indiana both closed out 2000 with below normal precipitation totals. The wettest areas were found over parts of Extreme Southern Michigan and parts of Northwest Ohio.
Annual rainfall totals ranged from the highest which was 46.88 (+8.21) inches reported by our co-operative observer at Dowagiac, Michigan to the lowest which was 33.71 (-3.66) inches reported by our Winamac Indiana co-operative observer.
