Damaging Winds of July 25, 2005

A weak front dropped south into extreme northern Indiana and became stationary by daybreak on the 25th. A cluster of thunderstorms developed over northern Illinois along this front during the early morning hours and moved east into northwest Indiana. These storms slowly intensified as they moved into a very warm and unstable airmass over Indiana. Eventually the cluster of storms organized and evolved into a bow echo over north central Indiana. This bow echo accelerated with a forward motion of 40 to 50 mph as it moved through northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio. The bow echo continued through central Ohio and then turned sharply south into West Virginia during the afternoon of the 25th.

Many reports of trees, tree limbs, and powerlines down throughout northern Indiana and northwest Ohio. Wind gusts were estimated to be around 60 mph with the strongest storms. The following is a preliminary local storm report for the event. All times are EST.
