Tornado - ROYAL CENTER, IN CASS COUNTY, IN Date Friday, March 31, 2023 Time (Local) 10:13 PM EDT to 10:16 PM EDT EF Rating EF-1 Est. Peak Winds 100 MPH Path Length 1.73 miles Max Width 300 yards Injuries/Deaths 0/0 Summary: An NWS storm survey confirmed a tornado touched down in an open field south of W CR 400 N, between N CR 1000W and 925W. It quickly tracked northeast, flipping flipping 8 spans of a center pivot irrigation system once. It also destroyed 2 large pole barns at a residence near 400N and 925W. Several trees were snapped and corn fodder from the field was pulled into the yard and extended northeast from there. The back garage portion of a home was damaged. Power poles were also snapped in the area. The tornado made a turn to the right some and began to weaken, striking a home at the intersection of W CR 400 N and N CR 900 N where the roof on the southwest side of the home was lifted, several smaller trees were also uprooted and a fuel tank was rolled into the field to the northeast. Debris was carried for a few more miles to the northeast. The track of the tornado may have continued further northeast but it weakened significantly after the noted damage areas. Tornado - 3 N NEW HAVEN, IN ALLEN COUNTY, IN Date Friday, March 31, 2023 Time (Local) 11:36 PM EDT to 11:43 PM EDT EF Rating EF-2 Est. Peak Winds 120 MPH Path Length 7.86 miles Max Width 400 yards Injuries/Deaths 0/0 Summary: The tornado developed over the northeast side of Fort Wayne, IN near the intersection of Maysville Rd and Cardinal Lane. It quickly raced northeast toward the town of Harlan, IN. Many homes and farms had minor to major damage. Extensive tree damage and powerline damage occurred especially along and south of IN-37 where the most significant damaged was observed, especially along Notestine Road. Extensive damage to a home at the intersection of IN-37 and Black Road. Major roof damage and trees snapped. (Liz Braden) CR Carpet in the 9600 block of Stellhorn Road in Fort Wane, IN had siding and framing damage. One exterior wall collapsed on the east side of the building after the roof was partially taken off.  (NWS IWX Survey) An older home at the intersection of IN-37 and Doty Road lost the entire roof. Lots of trees down in this area too. (NWS IWX Survey) A garage was destroyed in the 11700 block of IN-37. The exterior walls fell inward. (NWS IWX Survey) Severe damage to a wooded area near Milan Center Rd and Darling Road. Trees shredded. (NWS IWX Survey) Many Amish barns were heavily damaged on Ehle Rd between IN-37 and Bruick Rd. Tornado - 1 E HARLAN, IN ALLEN COUNTY, IN Date Friday, March 31, 2023 Time (Local) 11:44 PM EDT to 11:45 PM EDT EF Rating EF-0 Est. Peak Winds 75 MPH Path Length 1.14 miles Max Width 75 yards Injuries/Deaths 0/0 Summary: A brief, weak, and short-lived EF-0 tornado formed in response to a microburst that occurred off to the south. The tornado formed just south of Antwerp Rd between Bull Rapids Rd and Rupert Rd. The tornado continued northeast. Debris was observed in adjacent fields north of Antwerp Rd and the survey team also observed some trees snapped in the distance out in the middle of the field. Minor damage was observed to buildings along Antwerp Road and Dean Road. Trees in the vicinity were snapped and uprooted. There was also damage to a home on Rupert Rd near Dean Rd, including roof and siding damage. The tornado dissipated in afield south of Dean Rd. Tornado - 1 WSW SMITHSON, IN WHITE COUNTY, IN Date Friday, March 31, 2023 Time (Local) 9;55 PM EDT to 9:58 PM EDT EF Rating EF-0 Est. Peak Winds 85 mph Path Length 1.29 miles Max Width 125 yards Injuries/Deaths 0/0 Summary: A tornado touched down in an open field south of West Smithson Road and west of South CR 75W.  A wind turbine blade was bent over and another snapped off as it moved quickly NNE causing significant damage to a pole barn and throwing two empty silos into a field north of Smithson Road.  The tornado paralleled County Road 75 causing minor damage before lifting south of County Road 100 S.  Maximum winds are estimated at 80 to 85 mph with a width of 125 yards.  A wind speed rating cannot be assigned to the turbine blade, but the speed could be higher than the estimated range. Peak Winds 115 mph Path Length 15.18 miles Max Width 400 yards Injuries/Deaths 0/0 Summary: Primarily downed trees, power poles, and damaged farm outbuildings, however there were several homes damaged, 2 significantly.  The tornado began in Benton County, IN and tracked into White County, IN with the ending of the tornado 4 miles northwest of Badger Grove, IN. Tornado - 3 NE ANTWERP, OH PAULDING COUNTY, OH Date Friday, March 31 2023 Time (Local) 11:53 PM EDT - 11:55 PM EDT EF Rating EF-0 Est. Peak Winds 80 mph Path Length 0.82 miles Max Width 150 yards Injuries/Deaths 0/0 Summary: A brief, weak EF-0 tornado developed south of Road 424 and tracked rapidly north. There was some roof damage to a home and a few trees snapped along Road 1030 before the tornado crossed the Maumee River.  Several homes with minor roof and siding damage were observed on the north side of the Maumee River on Road 192.  Numerous trees uprooted and snapped along its path. Peak Winds 120 mph Path Length 3.10 miles Max Width 150 yards Injuries/Deaths 0/0 Summary: This tornado developed just south of 300 S west of Swayzee and tracked rapidly east through downtown Swayzee, ending just east of 600 W east of town.  Numerous homes and buildings sustained minor to moderate damage including roof damage to several businesses and the high school.  Numerous trees and power poles in and around town were snapped or uprooted. Tornado - GAS CITY, IN GRANT COUNTY, IN Date Friday March 31 2023 Time (Local) 11:42 PM EDT - 11:47 PM EDT EF Rating EF-3 Est. Peak Winds 140 mph Path Length 6.35 miles Max Width 200 yards Injuries/Deaths 0/0 Summary: This intense tornado developed just southeast of Gas City and tracked rapidly northeast, crossing I-69, before dissipating just east of 900 E and just south of 100 S.  Numerous homes sustained minor to major damage along this track with extensive tree damage noted in many areas.  The hardest hit area was just east off Blackthorn Drive where several homes were destroyed.  The tornado weakened as it crossed Interstate 69 yet continued to produce varying degrees of damage to barns, trees and homes before it dissipated. Peak Winds 85 MPH Path Length 1.54 miles Max Width 175 yards Injuries/Deaths 0/0 Summary: A tornado touched down at a residence south of E Co Rd 300 S and West of S Co Rd 500 E near Salamonia, IN. The tornado crossed E 300 S and also S Co Rd 600 E before dissipating in a field. Debris was lofted northeast causing damage to three newer barns as well as either pushing over or partially carrying empty grain bins. Environment

Strong low pressure allowed for strong low level moisture transport to push across the southern Great Lakes with highly anomalous moisture for deep March.  This allowed for a narrow instability axis across Illinois to shift across portions of northern Indiana overnight.

While not excessive instability, the combination of very strong shear and instability set the stage for severe storms.

Very strong wind profiles were an important component in creating an environment favorable for damaging winds and tornadic storms.

The instability component of this event was aided by high low level moisture and steep mid level lapse rates.  These steep mid level lapse rates contributed to very large hail across portions of northern Indiana during Phase 1 of this event Friday evening.

Figure 8: RAP 23Z - Mar 31 analysis of mid level lapse rates.  Very steep mid level lapse rates of 7-8.5 deg C/km during Friday evening promoted instances of large hail from quarter sized to golf ball sized.	Figure 9: GOES-East IR Imagery from approximately 10:11 PM EDT.  Cold cloud tops indicated vigorous convection across northwest Indiana that would spread eastward during the night.
