Overview
|
Following the August 11, 2026 derecho, multiple rounds of storms tracked through the area during the day on August 12th. Because the ground was so saturated from recent rainfall, flash flooding began during the midday hours, especially south of US 30. Many roads were closed and/or impassable due to rising water and there were a few reports of water rescues. 10"+ of rain fell in some locations from August 11th through the 12th! Pulaski, Starke, Fulton, Miami, and Grant counties in our forecast area saw numerous flash floods occur on August 12th. |
Flooding
Minor to Moderate flood stage occurred on several area rivers in northeast/east central Indiana following the 6-10" of rain that fell on August 12th.
Additionally, since NWS WPC's Excessive Rainfall Outlook (ERO) product began on October 5, 2004, our area has been in a Moderate Risk (level 3 of 4) 13 times. August 12th and 13th of this year was the first time our forecast area has ever had two consecutive days of a Moderate ERO.

Environment
Conditions were very favorable for heavy rain and flooding following several rounds of storms that came through the area from August 11th and 12th. A very humid airmass was centered over the Ohio River Valley and Great Lakes regions with precipitable water values in the 99th percentile (2") and strong moisture transport in the lower levels of the atmosphere. High values of moisture transport have been related to heavy rainfall potential with convective systems. Numerous flash floods were observed in northern and east-central Indiana on August 12th, including historic flooding in Muncie, IN and surrounding counties.
