Tornado and Severe Storms - February 27th-28th, 2011

National Weather Service, Springfield, MO

Event Summary

A complex storm system pushed through the Missouri Ozarks and southeast Kansas during the evening of February 27th into the overnight and early morning hours of February 28th, 2011.  A warm front pushed north of the area during the daytime on the 27th with warm, moist and unstable air moving into the Missouri Ozarks and southeast Kansas.  Warmer air in the mid levels of the atmosphere helped to develop a thermal cap which aided in suppressing the development of thunderstorms in the warm sector south of the warm front during the afternoon and early evening.  As an upper level disturbance began to move into the region from the west, it started to cool these mid levels, diminish the thermal cap allowed strong to severe thunderstorms to develop.  A cold front eventually pushed into the region from the west and quickly swept the thunderstorms to the east across the Ozarks.  Hail and high wind were the main reports with this severe weather event along with a few funnel cloud reports.
