Severe Storms - March 30th, 2013

National Weather Service, Springfield, MO

Event Summary

Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms initially developed during the mid afternoon hours of Saturday, March 30, 2013 over southeastern Kansas.  These storms expanded south and east into western and southwestern Missouri during the late afternoon and evening hours.  Many of the storms were supercells, and produced widespread nickel to half dollar size hail.  A few of the stronger storms Saturday evening produced hail up to the size of golfballs.

An additional round of thunderstorms overspread the area after midnight, producing additional rain and hail during the pre-dawn hours of Sunday morning.

Along with the hail, many parts of central and western Missouri, as well as southeastern Kansas, picked up a half inch to inch and a half of rain.
