1-2 January 2014 Light Snow

National Weather Service, Springfield, MO

Event Summary

After high temperatures in the 40s and 50s on New Year's Day, a strong cold front moved into the region, sending temperatures plummeting into the teens and 20s.  During the evening and overnight hours, a fast moving area of low pressure aloft swept across the Midwest and blanketed the area with light snow.  Snowfall accumulations of one to two inches were common across the region, with a few locally higher amounts.  Strong north winds accompanied this snowfall, with sustained winds between 15 and 20 mph and occasional gusts to around 30 mph.  This resulted in considerable blowing and drifting of the snow.
