Watching Hurricane Erin; Heavy Rainfall Threat for Upper Midwest; Heatrisk for Mississippi Valley

Hurricane Erin continues to track westward with its outer bands bringing heavy rainfall and gusty winds for Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands. Life-threatening surf and rip currents are occurring and will spread across the Atlantic coasts this week. A Flood Watch is in effect through Monday for Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Additional rainfall amounts 2 to 4 inches, with isolated amounts of 6 inches. Heavy rainfall may cause flooding of low-lying areas, rivers, creeks, and roads. Residents and visitors are urged to turn around, don’t drown, and avoid driving or walking through flooded areas.

Swells from Erin will bring 10–15 ft breaking waves through Monday morning, causing High Surf Advisory and High Rip Current Risk for northern and eastern Puerto Rico (including Culebra & Vieques) and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Western Puerto Rico will also face a high rip current risk. Avoid swimming in hazardous areas and follow beach flag warnings.
