⚠ Life-Threatening Rip Currents, High Surf and Hazardous Seas Seas of 7–10 feet and dangerous breaking waves up to 15 feet are affecting Atlantic waters and north- and west-facing beaches of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, including Culebra, St. Thomas, and St. John. Rip currents are life-threatening. Small craft conditions are hazardous. Avoid entering the water and follow local beach flag warnings.
STAY SAFE DURING HIGH SURF EVENTS: High surf events can be extremely dangerous and unpredictable. Large, powerful waves can sweep people off rocks, pull swimmers into deep water, and cause serious or fatal injuries — even for experienced beachgoers. During high surf, the National Weather Service urges the public to take extra precautions. Stay well back from the shoreline, avoid rocks, jetties, and coastal structures, and never turn your back on the ocean. If advisories or warnings are in effect, do not enter the water. Always watch ocean conditions before approaching the shore, and keep children and pets under close supervision. When high surf is present, the safest choice is to remain on land.
If caught in a rip current, stay calm and don't swim against the current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline, then at angle swim toward the beach.
