A strong, long-period northerly swell will cause marine and surf zone conditions to deteriorate starting Tuesday across Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Despite warm water temperatures, hazardous seas, dangerous surf, and life-threatening rip currents are expected, especially along north-facing beaches and exposed coastal waters. These conditions may persist through at least Thursday, with another swell possible over the weekend. Extra caution is advised during the holiday period. | Una marejada fuerte del norte y de período largo provocará el deterioro de las condiciones marítimas y costeras a partir del martes en Puerto Rico y las Islas Vírgenes estadounidenses. A pesar de las temperaturas agradables del agua, se esperan mares peligrosos, oleaje fuerte y corrientes marinas amenazantes, especialmente en playas orientadas al norte y aguas costeras expuestas. Astronomical winter began Sunday, with a noticeable but moderate cool-down expected across Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. From December 22 through December 26, a surface frontal boundary and a polar trough will affect the region, leading to cooler temperatures, especially during the overnight and early morning hours. The coldest period is expected from Wednesday night through Friday. Higher elevations will experience the lowest temperatures, while coastal and urban areas, as well as the islands, will remain milder due to the influence of warm surrounding waters. Although this is not an extreme cold event, the cooler conditions associated with the start of astronomical winter will be noticeable compared to recent days. | El inicio del invierno astronómico comenzó el domingo y traerá un descenso moderado, pero notable, de las temperaturas en Puerto Rico y las Islas Vírgenes de los Estados Unidos. Del 22 al 26 de diciembre, un frente superficial y una vaguada polar estarán influyendo la región, provocando temperaturas más frescas, especialmente durante las noches y madrugadas. El período más frío se espera desde la noche del miércoles hasta el viernes. Las zonas de mayor elevación registrarán las temperaturas más bajas, mientras que las áreas costeras, urbanas y las islas se mantendrán más templadas debido a la influencia de las aguas circundantes. Aunque no se trata de un evento de frío extremo, el descenso de temperaturas asociado al comienzo del invierno astronómico será perceptible en comparación con días recientes.
