Excessive Heat Takes Hold over Southwest US

A strong area of high pressure that settled in over the desert Southwest last week continues to bring extreme heat to the area. Well above normal temperatures began last Friday, June 16, and have not let up since. The hottest day during the stretch was June 20, where Las Vegas tied its all time highest temperature ever recorded of 117F and Needles, CA  tied its all time highest temperature ever recorded of 125F.

With very little relief overnight as low temperatures remained well above normal, a very dangerous situation has been in place over the past week or so. Excessive heat warnings have been in effect for the past week, but finally come to an end tonight. A much needed relief in temperatures arrives tomorrow as high temperatures drop below oppressive levels.

With the current excessive heat warning in effect through tonight, Monday June 26- this will be the longest Excessive Heat Warning ever issued by the Las Vegas National Weather Service.
