Record Heat for the Intermountain West and Northern Plains; Heavy Rainfall and Severe Weather Threats

Record setting heat is expected over the next several days from the Intermountain West through the northern Plains. Furthermore, fire weather concerns increase with dry and breezy conditions. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorm threats for the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys, central Appalachians and Southeast today. The warmest temperatures of the summer are expected this weekend through Monday, with highs getting into the upper 80s and 90s with up to 107 degrees in the lower valleys of north-central Idaho and Lemhi County. Drink plenty of water, wear light clothing, take frequent breaks, avoid strenuous activity during the afternoon hours and do not leave children or pets in vehicles.
Thunderstorms are forecast to develop across the Northern Rockies east of about Missoula today, primarily between 3 PM MDT and midnight. The storms are expected to track from southwest to northeast across the region. The main hazards with these storms include lightning, hail, and isolated wind gusts exceeding 50 mph, particularly in the highlighted marginal risk area of southwest Montana including Butte. If you are recreating outdoors today, monitor the sky. When thunder roars, get off the lakes and trails, and go indoors immediately.
